What Factors Should You Consider When Buying a Dartboard?

A good dartboard selection can make the game experience a lot more fun. When pruchasing a dartboard, consider the needs and skill of the end user. A professional dart player and a beginner hobby player will have very different needs when it comes to a dartboard.

However, they are factors to consider that should be applied broadly by consumers, regardless of which dartboard meets needs the best.

One of the first things that you will need to keep in mind is the size of the dartboard that you’re buying. Consider the amount of wall space available for the board.

Naturally, large numbers of players will also require more board space to play. A good rule of thumb is to purchase a board that is at a 15 inch smaller diameter than the available wall space.

Standard bristle dartboards are usually between 16.5 and 18 inches in diameter, while electronic dartboards usually go up to 15.5 inches or so. Standard-sized boards work well for 2 to 6 players.

When it comes to positioning the dartboard, the throw line should be placed at least seven feet and nine inches away from the board. The bullseye should be precisely five feet and eight inches from the ground.

Depth ; Density

Two easily overlooked components of the dartboard  that can greatly dictate game play are depth and density. Depth refers to how “deep” the dartboard is from the surface, whereas density refers to the material of the dartboard.

If a dartboard does not have the correct depth and density, darts will continually “bounce out” and will not puncture the board effectively. Most boards have a depth of 1.5 inches.

Dartboards need to be hung securely on the wall. Most dartboards will come with proper materials to hang the board. Some dartboards are hung from middle, but some hang from the top of the board. Using a cabinet or other backing to the dartboard can help protect walls from errant darts.

What Are the Different Types of Dartboards?

Dartboards come in a variety of types. Dartboards can be made from a variety of materials and can also have varying board variations that impact game play. These variations include colors, size of the bullseye, and how scores are tabulated.

Some of these special boards include the London Five, Manchester Log-end, and the Irish Black. Some common materials used for dartboards include paper, bristle/sisal, plastic, wooden, or magnetic.

What Is the Best Material for Dartboards?

Dartboards are made from a wide variety of materials, which can impact the durability and price. The highest quality dartboards are made from bristle (also known as sisal) or wood.

Paper Boards

These types of dartboards are the most affordable ones, but they are very fragile and are generally single use.

Bristle Boards

The bristle board is the most common type of dartboard available. They are generally affordable and suitable for all skill levels. Bristle boards are long-lasting and require minimal maintenance. For the best value and longevity, look for boards made of high-quality sisal material.

Electronic Dartboards

The electronic dartboard is considered a beginner’s dartboard. They use soft tip darts that are meant to fit in tiny holes that dot the entire surfaced of the dartboard. Electronic dartboards keep score automaticcally and can even help beginners learn the rules of certain dart games.

Wooden Dartboard

The wooden dartboard is intended to offer uniqueness, durability and a superior throw experience, especially with traditional metal-tipped darts. The highest quality wood dartboards are made out of solid hardwood and can withstand years of play.

Magnetic Dartboard

Magnetic dartboards are often viewed as a fun alternative to other dartboards. The darts have magnetic tips that adhere to the magnetic board. These boards are usually geared towards children and are considered toys.

Dartboards have a long history of providing entertainment. These boards not only provide hours of game play; the right boards add sophistication and style to a gameroom.

Flocked sisal or wooden dartboards are the most durable and attractive options, but there is a dartboard for every skill level and budget.
